There are few things better for your overall health than meditation. One of the greatest effects that we get from meditation is relaxing our entire nervous systems. The result is a lower stress level which than has a huge effect on every aspect of our lives.
We're finally realizing now how much stress can affect our health, both physically as well as emotionally. Constant stress results in a less effective immune system and keeps our bodies and our minds from dealing calmly with whatever issues come up on a daily basis.
Meditation also does more than protect our emotional and physical health. It also helps us to be in a more balanced and open mental state. This results in being better able to see the opportunities around us, determine what our priorities are and to put things into place to reach our goals.
There are many different ways to meditate and one is not necessarily better than the others. It's a question of finding the one that works best for you. The key is to find some time during each day when you can just be, sit quietly and not try to be doing many things at once.
The important thing is to just get started. Don't worry that you haven't learned the "right" way to do it yet. Also don't worry that you don't have much time. We have a tendency to feel like if we don't have an hour to devote to something it's not enough. But even a few minutes a day of meditating can help
Many people say they have a hard time emptying their minds. Don't try! This never works. When thoughts come up, you can recognize that they're there and then let them go, rather than fixate on them.
Don't wait another day to try meditation. Find some quiet time in the day to relax. Usually the first thing in the morning or the last at night is the best. Give yourself the opportunity to be in that space at that time and do nothing else. You may be surprised at how much better you feel after just sitting quietly.
